Windy Weather

This has been a week filled with lots of strong winds. Earlier in the week winds were recorded in McAllister at fifty-one miles per hour. Needless to say I was grateful to be indoors working on my art.

Ken thought it amusing that our cat, Mystic, wanted to help me. Unable to go outdoors he decided to play with my art supplies while I was working.

Late Tuesday afternoon I went to wash my brushes and noticed the sun was shining and the wind was suddenly silent after blowing relentlessly all night and all day. The sun was about to set in a few short minutes and I did not want to miss the opportunity to take a walk. The thirty-eight degree temperature made it seem like springtime. So, I informed Ken I was going out for a walk and he joined me camera in hand.

After a short trip around the walking trail at Lions Park we headed home. Ken stopped to capture the sun setting on the Madison range.

As you can tell, we still have not received significant snow fall. Temperatures are in the teens and twenties at night and the thirties and forties in the day. It has been a very different winter so far.

Not Much Snow

So many of you wonderful friends have been calling us to see how much snow we got from the huge storm that hit the west coast. We appreciate your concern.

It has been cold, then warm with lots of wind. Last night we got our first bit of snow and this morning it is raining and forty degrees. Friends of mine in other parts of the state received major amounts of snow and much colder temperatures.

The above photo was taken on Wednesday morning while I was out running errands. It looked like we might get some snow but it never never happened here in town.

Gropple

Ken took this photo on Tuesday in Bozeman. We were on our way to Billings for my eye doctor appointment. Gropple began to fall just as we drove into town. As you can tell it is January and the streets are clear of snow and ice.

We stayed with friends in Bozeman that night and it was eight degrees the next morning when we continued on to Billings. There were two large areas of ice covered roads from the brief storm that passed through but they were pretty clear when we made our way back home. It never got above twenty-five.

On Thursday when we reached Norris there was about an inch of snow and the road up Norris hill was icy. But, Ennis was dry and in the twenties.

This morning the wind is blowing and it is thirty degrees outside. I am amazed that it is mid-January and we do not have snow. Farmers are concerned and ski areas are hurting. What a strange winter we are experiencing.

New Year Sunrise

I love the sunrise and sunsets this time of year. They are spectacular. Ken captured these this morning. It was something beautiful to behold.

The wind was blowing so hard Ken had difficulty keeping the camera still. Our weather is so mild it feels more like spring than winter. It was forty degrees when we woke and is forty-five degrees now.

Well, back to my studio. I am having fun staining new pieces today. This is when they begin to come alive and take on their own personality.

Happy New Year! Our day began with snow falling, a gentle wind and twenty degrees. Things were rather quiet when I went out to take pictures for you.

As you can tell, Ken took a photo of me getting shots of the neighborhood and mountains. The neighbor's cat, Toby, stopped by to chat.

The deer, doves, blue jay and other animal friends stopped by as well. Everyone seems to be greeting the new year in a relaxed manor.

As 2012 dawns I wish you and yours a year filled with Love, Peace and Joy from me, Ken and all our friends here in Ennis, Montana. Have a blessed year.

2011, Christmas Morning

I randomly had been making nose prints on the plate glass window while conducting an imaginary count of the sun flower seeds lying on the snow on the ground under the bird feeders. Luckily the number of seeds and hulls counted has no impact on any perceived benefit to humankind. If it does, we as sum of the human society may be in more dire straits than first reflected. After a brief time, seeds and numbers evolved into boredom. Why work on something that is of no interest to my soul when talking with people and sharing what we all desire collectively may be of far more benefit. Luckily and suddenly an old and trusted friend crossed my fence line and casually made a path to his spot just under the window.

"Mornin' Buck," I called out as is tradition here in Montana. "How's the world treating you this fine Christmas morning? You look tired Buck!"

With his head down and a nose that was surgically sorting hull from seed he glanced up revealing snow and ice on a nose that had likely seen colder temperatures than this thru the darkness of Christmas eve. In a tone shadowed of fatigue and hunger he shared, "I am tired. I's up all night on call. My agent had me booked 'stand by ready' for some outfit up at the North Pole. Had I flown with him the pay likely would have been sizable but the hours would have been worse than I can imagine." Batting tired eyelids he continued, "The idea seemed like a good one at the time but I'm pretty darned glad I didn't get the call."

"Hey Buck, wanna come in for a hot toddy before you head on to bed?"

"No thanks my friend," he uttered quietly. "I need to go and find a place to rest my bones. Thanks for the seeds and best wishes to you and yours for these days of reflection."

"Buck, I promise we're not serving venison. Sure you don't want to sit in."

Buck chuckled, "That's good news for my kind but seeds will hold me over for a spell while I rest. If I don't see you or talk with you until next Christmas, give your bride a warm Montana hug for me. She sure makes this world a better place to live. Montana had a good day when you brought here up here. Thanks for the seeds and friendship. I'll tell my family that this is a safe haven for any of our kind to stop and chat. Gotta' run."

With that and a silent leap over the old white fence Buck sauntered off to bed down. "Ya' think there is any possibility that outfit at the North Pole rested Buck just so he and I could talk on Christmas? Maybe we should tell our respective stories. Seems like Christmas needs some new friends with good strong memories of its past to ensure that future generations 'on both sides of the fence' can share a remembrance of the Truth. The fellow at the Pole must have some strong visions for Christmas future from who knows where. Sure glad Buck introduced me to him. This Christmas seems to share the best of the old with the best of the new for all the world."

"Pleasant dreams till next year. No doubt we all will have much to chew on and share. I'll let Buck know tell his friends that we will all get together same time same place next Christmas morning and count the seeds. In the meantime, my prayer is that we will all remember how to see with our hearts!"

Determined Flicker

This determined flicker showed up yesterday during our snow storm. The house was spinning while this magnificent bird balanced itself with its tail feathers. It never even noticed as Ken took its picture.

Today people here in Ennis are reporting temperature ranges from six below to two above zero. The sun is shinning brightly. It well be a beautiful day.

Well, off to my studio to cut out more pieces so I can make room at the dining table for our Christmas guests.

Trip To Lions Park

It was a spectacular day. The thermometer on my car registered forty-five degrees when I took a short trip to Lions Park mid-day. The sunshine felt soooo good!

Although it was a bit breezy there were people out walking and admiring the almost frozen pond. The Christmas decorations are delightful and fun to see during the day without their evening lights.

The weather report says we can expect some snow tomorrow and more mid-week. Looks like we could have white Christmas after all. This has been a very different November and December.

Fog and Ice

It is seven degrees and foggy. The fog is a lot like the one in this picture Ken took last week when we spent the night with friends in Bozeman.

A beautiful frost is forming on everything. It is especially beautiful on the tree branches. It is a winter wonderland.

I have been busy filling orders and shipping them out for Christmas. There is still time to order off my online shop.

Yesterday it was cloudy all day. The high was twenty degrees but it felt really cold. With no significant snowfall yet this month we are wondering what our winter will be like this year.

Peaceful Doves

We were watching the birds this week at our feeders when Ken commented, "it is easy to see why the dove is the bird of peace." We always comment on how frenetic the other birds are but that day we were able to see the calmness of the dove.

It is twenty-six degrees outside and windy. Another cold front is due in tonight from Canada. Temperatures reached nine degrees below zero on morning this week but has been between nine to twelve above since then.

We still have some snow on the ground but it is going away slowly. I am so grateful the main roads are plowed on a regular basis.

Artisans Market at Christmas Stroll

Thursday, Friday and Saturday a group of local artists got together to offer our latest creations for viewing and for sale. Late Friday afternoon and evening residents attending the annual Christmas Stroll stopped by to feast their eyes on our creations and their bodies on our homemade goodies.

It is always such a joy to visit with members of our small community we don't often see during the summer. Santa was at the Pharmacy and children were delighted to share their excitement with us. Many enjoyed the hayrides and other festivities found up and down main street.

Although traffic was slow on Thursday and Saturday we enjoyed spending time with fellow artists. We shared information and ideas that kindled the fire of our creative energies encouraging us to move forward as winter begins to close in around us.

The weather was cold but not as cold as the year before. Today it is sixteen degrees with blowing snow. I have not had time to check the weather reports but I can tell you it is cold outside and a blanket of snow is everywhere.

The View from Lions Park

I wanted to go sit by the Madison river yesterday but the fishing accesses were closed. Luckily we have not had much snow so I was able to go to Lions Park and sit on a bench above the river. There is nothing more soothing than the sound of the river.

As you can tell a storm was brewing and headed our way. The wind picked up later in the evening and this morning began with rain then turned to snow. They are predicting two to five inches in the valley and six to ten in higher elevations.

As much as I would prefer winter wait a little longer I am sure the dance will soon end and I will be forced to settle into the quiet life style only winter brings. It is sort of like a bear settling into its den for the winter.

So far, it has been an unusual weather pattern much like the rest of the country.

It is Thanksgiving Day

It is Thanksgiving Day here in Ennis and I am so grateful for all the wonderful people in my life. I am very blessed to have touched base with so many of them this day.

I also appreciate you checking out my part of the world by visiting this little blog from time to time. It means lot to me to hear your words of appreciation for my posts and our shared connection to this place called Ennis, Montana.

At the moment the wind is still blowing. The temperature is forty-five degrees which is above average and very different from this time last year.

Another cold front is headed our way but it does not sound like it will be too cold or bring much snow to the valley.

As you can tell from the photos above the colors in the sunrises this time of year are spectacular. It is a joy to wake each day to the changing Big Sky of Montana.

One Degrees This Morning

Snow was falling and the wind blowing hard when I went to bed last night. This morning it was calm and one degrees. Now it is ten degrees and expected to reach eighteen.

Bozeman received lots more snow than we did here in Ennis. Friends who were in Bozeman day before yesterday said trucks were overturned on Norris Hill.

Other friends reported a foot of snow fell in Bozeman. As you can tell we might have gotten two inches here in town.

The forecast is even colder tonight but warming up to the low forties later in the week. It is shaping up to be an unusual fall.

Icicles

I can hardly believe a week has passed. After the six inches of snow fell Ken discovered these icicles in the yard one morning.

Temperatures have been in the twenties to forties. The strong winds make it feel much colder when you venture outside.

From time to time a few snow flakes have fallen. Each time it was just enough to cover the ground. Weather predictions are more snow and in the single digits later this week.

In the quiet of the morning I stood in the gallery in the presence of celestial beings in vestments carefully woven each in their own way so as to cloth them for the arrival of the new day. There was no music save the thunderous quite of the coming day.

Isn't it holy to stand in the presence of the Creation knowing that we are an integral part separate from absolutely nothing. It made me full within. --- Ken W. Hall

The six inches of snow is slowly melting. Temperatures have been lower than normal. One morning it was twelve degrees. This morning it was twenty. The high has been in the low thirties. Looks like it will get even colder as an unexpected cold sets in from Canada.

I am busy in my studio creating pieces for the holidays. I just posted some new ones in my online shop.

Snow is Falling

The snow has been falling since before sunrise this morning. The bird feeder is serving up meals to an unusual number of birds.

The children across the street are playing in the snow. Snow balls are flying and decks are being shoveled. Snow angels are being born.

The temperature remains at twenty-eight degrees. It has been a lovely morning watching the snow fall before heading off to work.

I love it when the wind is silent and the snow falls gently and steadily. It gives me such a peaceful feeling.

Time to go get the snow shovel and get ready to head out.

Is It Really November?

Is it really November? Time seems to be passing quickly. Hunting season opened along with a new meat market. I think I heard their first game to process for the season was a moose. I noticed elk in the back of some pickups as well. The warmer weather seems to make it harder on the hunters.

This morning it was twenty degrees and thirty-two when I went out to run errands at 11:00 AM. As you can tell from this photo taken from Jeffers it is also cloudy today.

The wind has been blowing strong for several days but today it is just breezy. The weather is expected to be like this until Friday when a winter storm is predicted with snow and high temperatures in the twenties.

Ken's Unexpected Journey

There have been moments when being married to an adventuresome photographer like Ken Hall has taken me on some unexpected emotional journeys. This past week we experienced one I will not soon forget.

Ken was supposed to pick me up at 8:00 PM on Thursday evening but did not show up. I finally walked home to discover he was not there and had not been there for some time. I had no idea where he was but the filled water bottle left behind on the kitchen counter was my first clue along with the absence of his camera and tripod.

Earlier in the day he mentioned he wanted to get images of the fall colors before they were gone. So, I knew he must have followed that urge. I also knew since he did not call to let me know he would not be there to pick me up he was likely in trouble.

I called a friend of ours who has worked with search and rescue to see if anything could be done this late in the evening. It had been dark for some time and snow was predicted. We both agreed not much could be done until morning. All I could do is wait until dawn.

That night I got plenty of practice keeping myself focused on the truth of the present moment. My precious mind wanted to take me on the most amazing imaginary journeys where Ken was in grave danger with bears, wolves or likely dead. But I knew in my heart he would be fine and I would eventually learn the truth.

After a twenty-four hour roller coaster ride for both of us and a welcome night of rest the above photo was taken by Ken Saturday morning at sunrise from our front yard in Ennis. He was grateful to be home after his unplanned snowy overnight adventure stuck in frozen mud near Black Butte in the Ruby Valley. When he is ready to share his photographs and details of the journey I will share them here.

When I got up this morning I whispered another prayer of thanksgiving that Ken was home safe. I noticed it was twenty degrees. A cold front is expected to bring snow this afternoon. The weather is changing and most people I talk with are reluctant to accept that winter is sure to come.

Fire Clouds

A few days ago we were having dinner with friends when Ken looks out the window, jumps up and runs outside to retrieve his camera from the car and took this photo. It really did look like fire as the sun was setting behind the clouds.

We experienced our first really hard frost this week. It was twenty-two degrees. Yesterday the sky was so clear, calm and beautiful we took a drive to enjoy the fall colors. The clouds moved in today but it was a little warmer hovering around sixty degrees.

We just got home from shopping at the fall Madison Farm to Fork market. The home grown produce we had for dinner was delicious.

Regal Deer

We met around 6:00 pm on October 11, 2011. While walking home I felt his presence and quickly snapped my head to lock onto his path of site. He was lazy, slightly sleepy and majestic. He was definitely a regal being of his own kind. He had staked his claim outside a friends fence in order not to leave himself without an avenue of flight in dire emergency. He breathed slowly and fully with calm reserve. He was composed and patient as is waiting for the rut which was in the air. His harem would find him when the unseen signal of their ancestors sounded.

I walked with a heightened gate to my studio a half block away and palmed my weapon, a Canon. It was not a canon that would bring life to an end but an instrument of truth and wisdom that would facilitate two elders to come together to share wisdom, stories and implement peace. He rested on his vestment of hide and hair and I on my knees of denim and boot.

At the conclusion of gazing into the mystery of the other we concluded the ceremony complete each in our own method and desire. He had seen my Soul and I his. With this an unseen signal had been sent forth. Let the Peace begin and spread through all living things.

It was done so I climbed back to my feet, bowed and walked home. I wonder where he slept that night? But what I really wonder is if he was real or just a vision of my own regal holiness. Either way it is good, no not good but perfect. i slept in my own bed with a Soul at rest in its true essence. It was a good day.

Ken sent me this photo he got a few days ago. Tonight it is raining. It was cloudy most of the day and in the fifties to low sixties. Looks like it will be in the thirties in the mornings and fifties during the day for the next week. The fall colors are beautiful and the deer are all over town.

The Dance Of Fall

It occurs every year. They come in early fall with the first snow. Some come from the sky, some from the clouds and some from within the bosom of the Earth Mother herself. No matter from where they come but that they come.

There is a dance to be done, no a dance that must be done. With movement, form and pure essence they come to welcome Fall as her presence appears in perfect timing with the plan. The plan is an etheric blend of sight, sound, vision, premonition and display of the ever changing cycle we call life.

In early October, 2011 the dance began as scheduled in the Madison Valley, Montana. To most it went unknown and unseen but for those who listen to their own heartbeat the dance commenced with fervor, joy and commitment to change.

Ken sent this to me today to share with you here. It was taken this past week. We have had several cloudy and sometime rainy days. The mountains are snow capped. The temperatures have ranged in the mid to high thirties in the mornings to the low to mid fifties in the evenings. Lovely fall weather.

Snow On The Mountains

It rained all night. The thermometer said it was thirty-four degrees when we got up and headed for Bozeman.

The mountains were covered with the first significant snowfall of the season. Ken got this great shot on the way out of town.

Two bald eagles flew over the car in the canyon along the Madison River. There were several boats with fishermen on the river.

The high of the day in Bozeman was forty-six degrees. It rained most of the day. Fall has definitely arrived.

Fall Leaves

Fall is here and the leaves are turning gracing us with a beautiful color pallet only nature can provide. The Ken Hall photo above captures a small sampling of that color.

Yesterday the wind blew strong all day releasing the leaves and creating carpets of color all over town. The warm temperatures were uncharacteristic of this time of year.

It was so warm last night we slept with all the windows open and woke to sixty degree temps outside. It was calm for a few minutes then the wind began to blow.

The heavy cloud cover gives a feeling of humidity and moisture. Temperatures are expected to drop and we are told by the weatherman this is the last of our warm above average temperatures.

It has been an amazing week full of lots of activities. I was fortunate enough to participate in a Madison Farm to fork program. It was a blast working with the fourth graders again.

We took a trip to Bozeman for art supplies and stopped by the Madison River to soak up the wonderful sun rays. It was about seventy degrees as the sun was slowly setting.

A couple of mornings it was thirty degrees but today it was fifty-four and only got up to the low seventies. I am loving this awesome weather.

Saturday we took a break and went for a walk in the bear trap canyon. We saw a little color as you can see by the red bush. We shared the canyon with fishermen, rafters and bow hunters.

We observed hundreds of coots on the lake migrating through our area. The osprey nests are abandoned for the winter. Fall is definitely here.

Elling House Art Reception and Concert

Ken was invited by The Elling House Arts and Humanities Center in Virgina City, Montana to offer a showing of his fine art Photography last Saturday in conjunction with a delightful concert by the Bozeman Symphony Far Afield Oboze group. It was a magnificent event.

Our good friend Steve Hulse was kind enough to share his amazing music for Ken's reception prior to the concert. The music and images created a joyful dance as we soaked up the magic of the evening.

Volunteers provided an impressive variety of delicious food and beverages. What a blessing to have so many of Ken's friends and collectors join us for this special event ending a memorable summer.

During the reception on Saturday some of our friends were commenting on the new snow dusting the mountain peaks during the stormy weather the day before. This morning it was thirty degrees with a frost on the roof and windshields. Looks like the promise of winter is knocking on our door. I guess it is time to do some serious preparation.

The Geese Were Talking

I was enjoying my morning meditation by the Madison river when I heard the sound of geese over my head. They always seem to chat with each other as they fly in formation. We are hearing and seeing more of them daily.

The weather remains awesome. It was in the mid-forties this morning. The full moon was taking its time setting as the sun made its entrance.

Yesterday was rather windy but so far today it is beautiful and calm. It feels so good to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine. What a magnificent day.

A Fabulous Day

Labor Day we spent the morning walking along the Madison River. The water was so clear I had to stop and take a picture. Then I noticed two baby osprey in their nest. As I attempted to get a good shot my battery died and the new ones were dead as well.

I knew it was a day to just soak in the beauty and wonder of the day. We observed geese, sand hill cranes, and baby deer. The sky was clear. There were butterflies and lots of flowers still in bloom.

We took time to sit on a couple of boulders beside the river and drink in the sound it makes as it rushes past flowing over the rocks. I love taking time to commune with nature. It always seems to wash away the stress and concerns that prevent me from enjoying the present moment.

The weather continues to be delightful with cool mornings in the thirties and forties. By late afternoon it is in the eighties to low nineties. We are truly blessed and life is good.

Another Busy Weekend

It was thirty degrees this morning. It is as if someone turned a switch and overnight we went from summer to fall. There is a distinctly different feel in the air. Everyone was talking about it over the weekend.

It was a busy weekend. Ken presented his popular photography seminar at the Madison River Foundation's annual Fly Fishing Festival. It was well attended and Ken did an awesome job as always.

A couple of days ago Ken shared this photo with me. He used it as an example in his presentation so I thought you might enjoy seeing it.

It is expected to be in the seventies and eighties this week. Perfect weather for at least one more week.

Fall Is In The Air

Ken captured this image yesterday while walking by the Madison River. The willows are changing color. The grass is dry and thunderstorms along with careless burns are causing fires to break out.

Children returned to school this week. Propane and oil tanks are filled. I see quite a few trucks full of firewood in town. There is a chill in the air reminding us to prepare for the changing weather certain to come our way.

The local weather man predicted three inches of snow in Glacier. The people I talk to are resisting the idea of winter. Our summers never seem to be long enough.

The wind blew all night. It is still blowing and the temperature is fifty degrees. Highs are expected to be in the seventies.

Yep. Fall is in the air.

Yesterday was a busy work day including a trip to Bozeman for work supplies. It was forty degrees when I got up but rapidly reached ninety by lunch time. The lack of wind made it feel a lot warmer.

Late in the evening I took a drive to Burnt Tree fishing access. There was a lone fisherman on the other side of the Madison River. I stayed for a brief time watching the river flow and listening to the sound of the water and the birds in the trees.

This morning it was fifty degrees and cloudy. The second photo shows the view from my front yard as the sun began to rise over the mountains. Looks like it is going to be another wonderful day in paradise.

Madison River Magic

I was feeling overwhelmed this morning with so much to do and so little time. I knew I had to take a break and head for the Madison River.

I love that Ennis is located right on the river. It takes me less than five minutes to locate a place on its banks. Today it was a rock on the waters edge.

There is something special about visiting the river. The sound of the rushing water as it flows past is so soothing.

After drinking in the beauty and wonder of nature's bountiful gifts I began to feel an inner calm. I took a few more moments to express my gratitude for the grace that brought me all the gifts I enjoy in my life.

Refreshed I headed back to my studio with a little clearer direction and a lot more energy to move forward.

Once again we are blessed with spectacular weather today. It was forty-five degrees when I got up and it is expected to be in the eighties again today. The lack of wind makes it even more enjoyable.

Awesome Weather

It has been a very busy week and the weather has been spectacular. I took this photo one evening while enjoyiing dinner with friends. Several days this week we experienced afternoon and evening showers.

The weather could not have been more perfect for today's Farmer's Market. It was in the fifties when we arrived. The bright sun and calm wind made for an awesome morning.

It is now late afternoon and about ninety degrees. We are so blessed to have such wonderful weather unlike many of our friends and family in other parts of the nation.

Summertime in Ennis Montana

Summertime in Ennis, Montana is always busy. There is so much to do it is difficult to cram everything into our short season.

Saturday was Farmer's Market, Ennis Arts Association Arts Festival and a Jamaican Festival all in the same day. The town was hopping.

We entertained out of town guests and attempted to fit a little play time in between work and other obligations.

Our weather is spectacular. The wind remains mostly calm. We wake to forty and fifty degree temperatures that climb to the eighties by late afternoon.

We experienced occasional afternoon showers this week. Friends from West Yellowstone reported hail that looked a lot like snow.

Ahhh, summertime in Montana is so wonderful.

Fishing at Lions Park

After dropping off some new pieces to Maydak's Gallery on main street I headed for Lions Park to take a quick walk by the river. The weather was spectacularly calm and seventy-two degrees.

There were lots of young fisher persons out supervised by their mom's and dad's. Our little pond at Lions Park allows only children to fish.

It is always great fun to sit on the bank under a shade tree and watch the delight in their faces when they catch their first fish of the day.

It was a spectacular morning. When I woke it was fifty degrees. Right now it is about seventy-eight and raining.

Earlier today friends of ours in town for a visit stopped by my house and accompanied me to Jeffers to see my friend Wade Miller the saddle maker . I needed Wade's assistance so I could complete my latest bowl project.

It was a magnificent morning. While there my friend and her grandson chatted with the young goats who were quite curious and very loving. It was a delightful treat for my friends from Denver to spend time petting the goats and taking in the beautiful view of the mountains.

Late Afternoon at the Campground

It was a busy Saturday. We had a booth at the Farmer's Market this morning selling Ken's photos and my leather bowls.

After finishing up some afternoon business items we both needed a break so late afternoon we headed for the campground just across the Madison River.

The wind was blowing and clouds gathering. Fishermen lined up at the boat ramp to head home from a beautiful day on the river.

I noticed the campground was finally full. It seems people are late coming to Ennis this season but they are finally here.

Just as we got home it rained for about two minutes then stopped. Now it is nice and cool after such a hot summer day. Windows are open the the fans running.

Ahh. Summer in Ennis.

Dinner Guest

Night before last we were greeted by this lovely lady each time we ventured out our front door. She sampled bird seed until I raised the feeder out of her reach.

Then she simply moved on to the bushes and sunflowers. After digging a hole she proceeded to make herself at home and chew her dinner.

Ken has made multiple attempts to restore the damage only to look out and find her back in her favorite spot after fluffing it again to suit her tastes. It appears we may have a new resident in our front yard. Wonder how long she will be staying?

She seems to like the shade the trees offer. Temperatures have been in the fifties in the mornings and mid to upper eighties during the day. Although it feels hot to us (we do not have air conditioning) it is much cooler than our friends in other parts of the country. We are truly blessed.

Gas Station Buck

He had just crossed the highway on his way to somewhere and something. His instincts were in full control directing a seemingly undirected journey…from here to somewhere, this moment to the next.

My camera, resting on the floorboard of the truck between my feet, almost levitated into my shooting hand to commit the moment to memory. His confusion and panic did not misdirect him from the instinct that had directed his journey to this instant.

Isn't it simple when Creator paints a self portrait for us so we can see the truth of our life at any given moment! Any ideas if the buck was real or imagined and if real where the path has led since our encounter?

Likely the same coincidental moment and its message will recreate itself at the perfect time and place in another vision, real or imagined, for an update on the course taken."

We Followed a Bear

Artist friends of ours arrived on Monday and we have been busy all week mixing work with play. Wednesday we delivered our new art works to Creighton Block Gallery in Big Sky.

We took the long road back to Ennis through magnificent countryside. After enjoying a nice picnic on the ground by the river we headed toward West Yellowstone.

That is when we spotted two young bears feeding along the roadside. Neither of them seemed to mind that so many people stopped to admire them and take pictures. We followed them along the road for quite a distance until they moved out of site. It was quite an exciting event.

Ken and our friends burned up many camera batteries and pixels capturing sites too awesome to describe or record. The weather was perfect.

The week has been part windy, part calm. The past two days temperatures have not risen much above eighty.

With most of their work out of the way our friends opted to stay another day to relax, fish and play. I see new adventures ahead.

Saturday morning we opened our booth at the Farmer's Market. This year the market is in the parking lot of Valley Bank. It is always fun to visit with old friends and make new ones.

I love the home grown meats, fresh produce, fresh baked breads, pies and goodies as well as some home made salsas. Local craft persons show their new creations and non profits offer helpful information. It is a fun event complete with local entertainment.

This morning we took a walk along the Madison River. The wind was silent as we strolled along admiring the tall grass and beautiful variety of blooming plants and flowers.

Snow remains on the mountain peaks. But, I noticed the water is clearing up. In some places you can see the rocks. Fisher persons are out and reporting the fish are definitely biting.

It was in the forties when we woke this morning. We are expecting temperatures in the nineties early part of the week.

This morning I visited the Madison River at Burnt Tree fishing access for the first time since returning home. A gathering of geese on the island in front of me caught my eye.

After wandering around for a brief time three leaders seemed to signal the break was over. They all lined up in a row and entered the water one at a time as the current swept them away at a rapid clip.

It was sixty-five degrees then. Now it is pouring down rain and the temperature outside is sixty degrees. I am amazed at the amount of rain these past three days.

Yesterday we went to Jeffers to walk along the Madison River. The grass was waist high most of the way and even higher in others. I saw flowers and plants and insects I never remember seeing.

The mountains still have snow but it is melting fast. Temperatures are in the forties and fifties in the mornings and the seventies and eighties in the afternoons.

A small rain storm passed through during the night.

It was hard to imagine the flooding in Montana that was reported to me while I was in Arkansas. Today I visited the Madison River and Lions Park to see what the run off is looking like.

This video was taken in Lions park. The ending was a little odd because I did not realize it was taking a movie instead of stills. I don't remember a time since we moved here that the river has been this high.

As you can tell our clear blue skies changed to thunder clouds. It is raining as I write this. I heard the sound of raindrops a few minutes ago. The thermometer says seventy degrees. This is a nice change to the heat of the past couple of days.

It has been a busy day in my studio. My Etsy shop is up and running again. I filled an order and started staining pieces I left drying in April. It is good to be working my studio again.

A Special Forth of July

I returned home from Arkansas late Sunday evening just in time to celebrate the 4th of July. I woke to the sound of silence pierced only by the occasional singing bird and a cow welcoming the dawn.

My luggage failed to arrive so I located a pair of sweats and a jacket and savored my morning cup of tea outdoors on my newly decorated deck. Admiring Ken's handy work I was overwhelmed with a deep sense of gratitude for all the gifts I have been given.

After three months apart Ken and I had much to share as we chatted and prepared to attend the annual parade downtown. Neighbors came out to greet me and welcome me home as we walked downtown for the parade.

While I was gone Ken found outlets in Ennis where friends and collectors will be able to purchase our art work this summer. So we left early enough for Ken to show me the canvases and prints on display at the newly opened Banditios Restaurant and Gravel Bar Grill.

Our second stop was Maydak Gallery to see yet a different collection of Ken's images as well as well as my blessing bowls. We arrived just in time to meet a customer who was purchasing one of my leather bowls. It is such a joy for me to get acquainted with collectors of my work.

As usual there was an enormous crowd for the parade. Old friends welcomed me home with heart felt hugs and new friends shared in the celebration of life and freedom.

This year I felt a deeper sense of love and appreciation for the lives of the friends and neighbors that work tirelessly to make Ennis such a great place to live. There is a unique quality of life shared by those who make the Madison Valley their home. Perhaps that intangible essence that can only be felt is one of the reasons so many visitors return year after year.

It feels so good to be home.

It's Only Temporary

Please forgive the temporary lack of posts. The end of March I headed to Conway, Arkansas where my mother and sister were both hospitalized. They are improving but still require my assistance. As soon as I return to Montana I will resume my posts.

When I spoke with Ken yesterday he said this past week there were three days of three inches of snow. Temperatures are in the twenties in the mornings and warm to the forties in the day.

With all the moisture this year the run off is likely to be significant.

The ice on the pond at Lions Park is melting. The Madison River is flowing and the fields of ice are slowly showing signs of the land beneath.

It was difficult to take a photo today without getting my hair in the shot. The wind was already blowing when I got up.

It was about thirty degrees then and although we have had a few moments of sun it remains mostly cloudy. It is about forty degrees now but the wind makes it feel much colder.

Flying Eagles

We saw our first robin on the way to the lake yesterday. The day before Ken captured the above photo of an eagle in Jeffers.

The lake is slowly thawing. We could see open water in a few spots.

As we traveled into bear trap canyon we passed several fishermen getting in some time on the Madison river before the run off begins. It was windier in the canyon than in town but by the time we returned home the storm was creating heavy winds in town.

Temperatures were close to forty when we left for the lake. Once at home temperatures began to drop and the snow fell. It was a beautiful snow fall that looked to be about one or two inches.

It feels so good to see signs of spring after a long winter.

The Gallatin River

The sun was out on Sunday when we took a quick trip to Big Sky to visit the gallery that represents my work there. Temperatures were in the high thirties.

Ken stopped along the Gallatin River and captured this bolder. Many of them still had snow on them that was beginning to melt.

We wanted to stop for lunch in our favorite camping spot but the snow was too deep. We pulled over at one of the turn offs and shared lunch in the car.

Today it is forty degrees. It was raining when we got up but stopped about 7:00 AM. It is cloudy outside and looks like it snowed in the mountains.

Madison River Opens Up

i could hear the geese flying over as I stepped over what remained of the ice that covered this area not too many days earlier. It was good to be able to walk to this spot in Lions Park again and watch the river flowing freely.

Temperatures have been in the forties during the day all week long. The wind blew all week long so hard it was not pleasant to be out of doors.

The weather man says temperatures will be colder next week. I am so ready for spring.

Ken just sent me these photos from his trip around the lake yesterday. What a rare sight to see a pair of trumpeter swans and their offspring in the same location. They were swimming in the river just below the bridge.

Yesterday is the first day in several that the wind was down to a slight breeze. Just as Ken was arriving home from his trip around the lake a snow shower feel leaving less than an inch of fresh pellets.

Temperatures remain lower than normal for this time of year. We are excited when they get into the mid thirties and reach up to forty. Today the sun is shining and it is a little windier than yesterday.

Arctic Air

If you have ever visited Lions Park here in Ennis, Montana and crossed the bridge over the pond to the Madison River you will recognize the bench in the photo above. It looks like it is covered in snow but that is actually ice from the river.

The ice you see through the fence in front of the bench is the Madison River. This is the first time I have ever seen it flood this favorite lookout area. I love to sit there in the summer and watch the fishermen on the river and the cars pass on the bridge.

As you can tell from the other photo the ice is touching the bridge. In Twin Bridges there are several homes in danger of flooding as we all brace for another arctic blast that is expected to send temperatures to an estimated twenty-one below zero in some areas.

Today it is two degrees with strong winds. We have had light snow off and on all day. I am grateful all my errands are done and I can settle in for the rest of the evening.

Dove Visitor

We have been blessed all winter with two pairs of doves who visit us daily. They have the most beautiful song. I love watching the birds. It amazes me how many remain here all winter.

The weatherman was predicting two to eight inches of snow last night. We woke to way less than an inch. It was just enough to put a little ice on the deck. The temperature was twenty degrees and is expected to reach into the low thirties. The sun just came out. Looks like it will be a beautiful day.

Snow, Cold and Solitude

"Snow, cold and solitude…all these were present as I watched a yearling mule deer in refuge in our front yard instinctively and methodically chewing the few sunflower seeds gathered moments before from under the bird feeder. These seeds mixed with leaves from the juniper tree brought a connection and nourishment to an instinct strongly remembered and trusted for survival in seemingly hard times. Did I give this day enough thanks for warm cereal, cozy rooms and shelter from the wind? Because I posed the question, maybe not. My soul feels lighter since I questioned."

It is very cold outside...windy and ten degrees. Just a couple inches of snow fell last night. Enough to create icy and snow packed roads all the way to Bozeman. Looks like we are in for another really cold night.

Mountain Top

We had about three inches of snow yesterday when we headed to Bozeman to meet a friend. Norris hill was snow packed and icy. By the time we returned home late afternoon the roads were dry from wind and occasional sun.

Today it has been cloudy most of the day. More snow is predicted and another arctic blast. Currently temperatures are in the low twenties.

Madison River Gorges Again

Officials placed signs on the highway between Ennis and Jeffers to watch for water on the road. The below zero temperatures caused the Madison river to gorge again. The once open channel is solid ice.

So far the highway is dry and temperatures are beginning to warm up slightly. Right now it is seventeen degrees but it was twelve below zero when we first woke this morning.

The sunshine and lack of wind were a true blessing today. Interesting how sunshine makes you feel warmer even if the temperatures are below freezing.

Grizzly Bear Up Close

It is three degrees below zero today. The sun came out mid-morning and it is awesome. It is expected to drop to twenty-two below tonight.

Ken was in Bozeman this past weekend. Here is what he had to say about the photos of the grizzly bear you see in the above photos:

I spent this past weekend in conjunction with my affiliation with the Madison River Foundation at the annual Bozeman Sports Show in Bozeman.

The Show dates were January 28, 29 and 30.

The bear's name is "Tonka". He has just recently turned five years old and weighs 500 lbs. His is now half grown.

The owner, Dexter Osborn got Tonka at 6 weeks old from a zoo in Georgia.

Tonka has numerous tricks he performs upon commands from Dexter. He throws his head back and bares his teeth, he stands vertical on his hind feet and waves, he takes food from Dexter's hand. And upon the command "Yoga" he lays on his back with his front paws, which are enormous, holding his hind feet and rocks on his spine as if in a yoga position. It is a real show stopper!

Seeing an animal such as this in such close proximity truly shows what a small part as humans we play in the drama of life and its perfection.

The Madison River Today

The Madison River has settled back into its banks. An ever widening channel has opened and the water is flowing freely.

I took this short video off the bridge near Lions Park this morning. Lots of ice is floating in the water. And as you can tell the highway is dry and remains free of flooding for now.

Temperatures remain in the thirties with strong winds that make it feel much colder. We had a little sunshine this morning. Tomorrow is expected to bring more sunshine with temperatures in the high thirties.

The weather man reports these are above normal. He also predicts snow for Sunday.

Interesting January

What an interesting January we are having. On Wednesday morning we woke to snow. About six or so inches fell.

Thursday morning our thermometer read eight degrees. The wind howled Thursday and Friday.

Friday night it was about thirty-two degrees when we arrived at our local movie theater. After the movie it was snowing again.

This morning there were a few flakes of snow falling with only a slight breeze, Now the sun is shinning. It is thrity-seven degrees and the wind barely brushes your cheeks.

The snow is melting rapidly. Temperatures are in the high teens and low twenties at night freezing all the melting snow. The weather man is predicting temperatures in Bozeman to reach into the low forties this next week.

It's Raining

It is thirty-eight degrees and raining in Ennis today. I drove across the river to check on the highway situation.

As I crossed the Madison River heading toward Cameron I noticed a significant channel had opened and the river was flowing more freely along the south bank.

I traveled further to investigate the area where flooding occurred on the highway. The ice that formed a barrier on the guard rails is melting but the road remains clear. There are some water puddles and the road is wet from rain.

Traveling back across the river I stopped at Lions Park. I walked to the river's edge and discovered another channel opening up on this side of the river.

The weather is expected to remain pretty much the same all week. We are loving the warmer temperatures.

Just Some Local News

Ken and I love Mexican food. We were delighted when the new Taqueria Las Palmitas arrived this winter. It is authentic Mexican cooking at affordable prices. We are encouraging all our friends to support them this winter. We would love to see them thriving this summer.

Speaking of summer there are plenty of residents dreaming of summer. The ice jams on the Madison River caused police to notify residents near the river to be prepared to evacuate.

Highway 287 south flooded again yesterday as deep as eighteen inches in some places but was clear today. Heavy winds are bringing warm temperatures and moisture that will begin as snow then turn to rain. This could cause more flooding.

Returning from the grocery store today I was stopped by the highway patrol at the highway intersection. They were cautioning people not to travel 287 south of town due to high winds and blowing snow making visibility zero.

Friends of ours live in that area. They reported being snowed in due to major snow drifts. A snow plow made way for them to get out and in a short time later the drifts were four feet deep and they were once again unable to leave home.

The high today was twenty-eight. Tomorrow it is expected to reach as high as thirty-eight. What strange weather patterns this winter.

Wednesday morning Ken left early to explore the flooding situation. The guard rails were covered with ice forming as cars and trucks passed through the water that flowed over the highway the day before. The road itself was icy but relatively free of flowing water.

Ken ventured into Lions Park where Christmas decorations were affected by the ice and snow. Although the park was flooded and covered in ice he managed to reach the Madison River.

The ice jammed up under the bridge caused the river to gorge and overflow its banks. It looks like it will be some time before temperatures will moderate enough to thaw the ice.

Temperatures rose as high as forty degrees by yesterday along with strong winds. This morning it is ten degrees and tiny snowflakes are falling. I am glad I get to stay inside today.

New Experiences

The skies displayed a beautiful range of colors as the sun went down New Years day. Temperatures began to climb above zero again with highs mostly in the teens.

By Tuesday morning the wind was blowing strong making the eighteen degree temperature feel closer to zero. By the time we reached Bozeman to take a friend to the doctor it was twenty-two degrees and partly cloudy. The office was located next to a popular cross country ski area where local skiers took advantage of the near perfect conditions.

When we arrived back home late afternoon we decided to check out the report we received early morning from a friend that the highway between the bridge over the Madison River and the turn off to Jeffers was flooded. The river gorged due to an ice jam at the bridge and was flowing over the highway.

Just as I attempted to take a photo Ken drove through the one foot deep water causing it to freeze immediately as it hit the windshield. It has been several years since the water has crossed over the highway.

Ken hurried back to document the situation yesterday morning. I will have more photos for you in a day or two as seen through his unique perspective.

Baby It's Cold Outside!

It was about ten below zero when we woke this morning. Ice formed around the metal windows and sliding glass door. The door froze shut and the lock on the front door froze as well.

Needless to say I am happy to be indoors working in my studio. It is warm and cozy inside. Outside the birds are busy dining at the feeders and the deer are cleaning up any seeds that fall to the ground.

The mother deer has been tilting one of the feeders and emptying it. I think I managed to place it high enough to prevent that from happening again. So far it seems to be working.

It is hard to tell exactly how much snow we got from the storm. The wind blew constantly. I would guess it was somewhere between two and three inches.

Today skies are clear and the wind is silent. The cat however is complaining loudly. The cold weather interrupted his normal routine and he is not happy.

Pink Sunrise

Christmas day we woke to a magnificent pink sunrise. We marveled at the weather. It was beautiful, clear and in the mid thirties. It was not your normal weather for December. Travel for our guests was a breeze.

The wind has blown steady for several days now. Actual temperatures were in the low thirties but the wind made it feel much colder.

As you can tell by the second photo a storm is headed our way. The wind is howling and light snow is beginning to fall. Temperatures are in the mid to high twenties.

I have been busy taking trash to the dump, buying groceries and getting packages in the mail before the storm hits. The weather man predicts between six and ten inches of snow. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 21 degrees below zero tomorrow night.

Could Be A White Christmas

An inch of snow fell last night in downtown Ennis. Virginia City Ranches reported about four inches. As you can tell our roads in town are still ice and snow covered from the last snowfall.

The thermometer on the car said it was twenty-seven degrees when I headed out to the post office a few minutes ago. The sun is shining bright and melting snow from the roof and driveway. It feels much warmer especially since there is no wind.

Looks as if Christmas day will be a lot like today. That is good news for family traveling from Bozeman.

Holiday Artist Appreciation Show

Over night Donna Evans and Kathy Carpenter transformed the old bank building downtown into a temporary art gallery showcasing the incredible talents of our local artists. Last night the artists gathered from three in the afternoon until eight in the evening to greet the public.

No one seemed to mind the lack of attendance by the "public". Art has a way of warming hearts, lifting spirits and stimulating positive creative conversations and ideas. This local family of artists came together to celebrate life through creative self expression.

Surrounded by magnificent works of art we quickly forgot the light snow and thirteen degree weather outside. We were too busy sharing our own journey and encouraging each other in spite of life's challenges to follow the spark of the divine within and share the beauty of life through art.

We came together for a reception. We left with a warm glow in our hearts somehow changed by the experience.

Thank you Kathy and Donna for listening to the voice that led all of us to this little slice of heaven in the midst of a cold winter.

Heading South

Ken captured the Madison River on his way through Bear Trap Canyon to Bozeman on Saturday. Snow abounds in the Madison Valley as well as the Gallatin Valley.

Today we have been busy preparing to head south to Texas for a wedding in Ken's family. I will post again when we return next week.

It is thirty- five degrees outside now. The wind has blown steady and hard all day long. The sunshine was a welcome sight.

A new storm is headed our way and should add more snow to the area starting Friday. If all goes well it will have passed by the time we return on Tuesday evening.

Morning Snow

Yesterday it was snowing when we got up. Ken took this just before sunrise. The storm left a couple of inches of snow and passed through. By noon temperatures were in the high thirties. The higher temperatures and lots of sunshine helped melt some of the accumulated snow.

The lack of wind was welcome as we prepared for the annual Christmas stroll. A small group of artists gathered in the old First Madison Valley Bank building downtown to offer our hand made gifts for holiday shoppers.

The event was well attended as children of all ages enjoyed hay rides, Santa, refreshments, shopping and fun in downtown Ennis, Montana.

Temperatures dropped overnight into the single digits and soared to a whopping nineteen degrees this afternoon.

Snow and Wind

Yesterday was wonderful. It was the first day without wind and there was plenty of sunshine. Today is a different story. The wind is strong and the skies are filled with clouds. The high was twenty degrees which feels like just below zero.

The Madison river has gorged. Ken took the above photo at the campground the day before it flooded. The first photo is Ennis Lake at sunset.

There is more snow in the forecast for the weekend. Looks like I will be spending lots of time in my studio and office.

Thanksgiving in Ennis

This is the coldest Thanksgiving I have ever experienced. It was just below zero when we got up to put the Turkey on to cook. The wind was already blowing and blew hard all day. Factoring in the wind it felt as if it were 34 below.

Our dear friend finally arrived safely after being stranded for two nights due to closed highways. He traveled more than a thousand miles to be with his "family" bringing gifts of, love, joy, poetry and creative excitement.

As our extended family began gathering to share a Thanksgiving feast of delicious food and creative fellowship, I reflected on the never ending list of things for which I am deeply grateful.

We are blessed to live so closely connected to mother nature's ever changing landscape. Her bounty of birds and animals drift in and out of our lives providing us with endless joy and entertainment. Then there are those special moments when like magic Ken captures a blink of God's eye with his camera's lens to preserve and share.

I am deeply grateful for all our friends who lovingly support our creative efforts, admiring, purchasing and collecting our art. They help us share the healing touch only God's creation can provide.

Ken and I are blessed to enjoy our small community along the Madison River surrounded by a growing family of friends that extends to all parts of the United States and beyond.

I am filled to overflowing with gratitude for life.

More Snow

It is just after 4:00 PM and still snowing. It's been snowing since about 9:00 AM. Above you are looking out the sliding glass door to our back porch. The blur on the left of the photo is the ice on the glass. It is about five degrees below zero. Our high was three above when we got up this morning.

As you can tell by the photo that drift is rather deep. It reaches the top of the porch and those trash can lids. It is supposed to get much colder tonight. I can feel it getting colder outside. The windows are getting ice on them.

Our friend from New Mexico was due to arrive today for Thanksgiving. He is enjoying an unscheduled stop in Pocatello, Idaho. He stayed there last night and will stay again tonight since the roads have been closed all day and will continue until sometime tomorrow when the blizzard stops long enough for plows to go through.

This is quite a storm.

Another Winter Storm

Another winter storm is just now arriving after a day free of wind and snow. It was three degrees when we woke this morning. At 2:00 PM it was nine degrees.

Right now it is just past 4:30, snowing and the wind is blowing. Predictions are that our high on Thanksgiving will be below zero.

Thank goodness it is warm and cozy inside. Time for another cup of hot tea.

Today

Yesterday we were busy preparing for the predicted storm. Temperatures stayed in the low thirties most of the day. The absence of wind was welcome as we rushed to complete our errands before the arrival of the arctic air.

Snow fell all day yesterday and continued into the night. We woke this morning to ten degree temperatures and about four inches of snow.

It continues to snow now. They are predicting as much as twelve inches in town and two feet in the passes. Temperatures are expected to drop to below zero with highs in the single digits the day before Thanksgiving.

The birds have been feeding all day long. I filled the feeders twice.

One of my friends further north reported three feet of snow. I think winter is here to stay.

Then It Snowed

The snow arrived on Monday and fell off and on all week. It was not too bad in town but out near the Fish Hatchery they got about four inches.

Temperatures were in the teens at night and the low to mid thirties in the day. It snowed again today and more is expected for the next few days.

Winter is here.

A Visit To Yellowstone National Park

Saturday we headed into Yellowstone National Park before it closed for the season on Monday. It was amazing. We were the only car at the entrance. The few visitors we saw were out enjoying the park on foot.

There was a guy parked by the Madison Ricer sitting in his lawn chair reading a book. There were kids playing with their dogs. Fishermen were everywhere taking advantage of the sixty degree weather and soft gentle breezes.

The crows were missing the plentiful treats provided by the summer visitors. The guy in the photo above was moving from widow to window looking for something to eat. Still seeking attention and food when we returned to our car we shared a few seeds from our trail mix.

We were blessed to be one of the first visitors to enjoy the newly completed viewing station for Gibbons Falls. It is breathtaking. The sound of rushing water over the rocks is so powerful.

The Natural World in its balance, form, color and dynamics is ever captivating and sometimes shocking. It is always in our face by some means. This morning, halloween, I was in the studio when the door opened and Penny entered. "There is a big bird out there, get your camera!"

Having had Penny for spotter, guide and wife for sixteen plus years I know when she follows her intuition. It was happening again. With camera in hand ready for the "safari" to the front of the house I quickly set footsteps one after the other.

Low and behold, once again she connected me with a "natural happening". Perched on a limb in our "forest" in the front yard was a bird I witnessed on more than one occasion…the most recent in a bullet like flight at a speed barely able to capture in the blink of a human eye. The feathered rocket had tracked a bird in flight and was giving terminal chase to what was soon to become a meal.

It was our resident Sharp Shinned hawk, prey in talon sitting on our front grass patiently waiting for the capture to expire which it did in a very short time. By instinct the hawk bolted into a juniper tree to feast.

Some exposures were made through the living room window but with only blurred and non recognizable resolution. Knowing full well this was a rare and sacred moment I gently turned the door knob to the outside and quietly set a initial step onto the deck. Were eye to eye and soul to soul twenty feet apart…the hawk with its natural prey and I with a fistful of technology.

As the bird continued with laser surgical precision to feather by feather and flesh by flesh shred and consume the small bird I could sense its enhanced restlessness, knowing full well flight soon was to explode and the experience would be only a fleeting memory in the ozone. With several bursts of camera clicks and whirs there were images and the explosion of the hawk with tattered remnants of prey speeding in flash into the unknown of the future.

It was finished, over and done except for the graciousness of the Creator and the restless patience of the hawk. I stood there with technology in hand and food for my soul. With these I introduce you to my world of hawks, wisdom and expansion of experience.

Another Visitor

This little guy stopped by several times this week. A hawk dropped in this morning. The rush to eat as much as possible before the rain created quite a show.

Our week began with wind, clouds and a few snow bursts. The mountains were showered with white snow. Yesterday the sun was out and the wind silent. We took a lovely ride in the mountains nearby.

Today it is raining. Temperatures continue to be above normal. We are expected to experience temperatures in the mid forties to low fifties again this week. I am loving this amazing weather.

Unexpected Company

"We had unexpected company for a meal with us…they just dropped in unannounced. We hadn't seen the new baby so the miracle was truly amazing to behold. There was Mom, Dad and The Little One.
They didn't stay long, just a quick meal on sunflower seeds and then a melding into the night. With this they were gone.

The Dad was regal in his finest male adornment, the Mother soft and gentle and the Little One ever present with curious and new found wonder of life. I know they were sent just for me for I have been searching and longing for 'curious wonder of life for myself.' Some say, "seeing is believing." What I saw was a bundle, a spiritual bundle carefully wrapped with tradition, magic and 'the curious wonder'. The amazing thing was I didn't see it with my eyes, I saw it with my heart."

My prayer is that we all will remember to see with our hearts and remember with our souls.

Unhappy Moose

Raised hackles gave Ken a clear message his presence was not appreciated. The moose was clearly not in the mood to have her picture taken.

The moose was spotted chowing down on the side of the road as we traveled to Big Sky earlier this week. Several people stopped to marvel at the rare sight of such a magnificent animal.

We are spending as much time as possible outside walking and enjoying this weather. Temperatures are in the mid to high twenties in the mornings and in the low sixties to mid seventies later in the day.

Leaves are turning color and slowly falling.

Beautiful October

What an amazing week it has been. We experience our first hard freeze earlier in the week. It was so much better than last year. This week it was only in the twenties.

Last year this time we were shocked by below zero temperatures and snow. We are happy to enjoy these warm, beautiful days.

The rest of the week improved in temperature waking to high thirties and low forties. We enjoyed a couple of days around seventy.

Yesterday it never rose above fifty. A soft rain spinkled on us most of the day then poured as we went to bed. This morning it is cloudy and the mountains appear to have received a dusting of snow.

What a beautiful October. I love the colors in the sky this time of year.

Breakfast Guests

"Yesterday morning we had company for breakfast!

This is not the first time she has joined us for a meal.

Today she was dressed in her newest winter outfit, even as new and untidy as it appears.

She didn't linger, just sampled the plants and moved on. Just as well, our cat Mystic was on a mission when he sensed her presence and bounded onto the window sill where he holds court and observation.

Our friendliest neighbors are multiple deer, four raccoons, a lone skunk and a river full of brown and rainbow trout. If I remember correctly, there are some humans in the vicinity as well although they are not as interesting and they have a lot of nothingness to speak when approached.

We must be doing something right to be blessed with all this."

Fall Skies

The fall skies welcomed me Tuesday evening when I returned home from a visit with my family in Arkansas for my mother's birthday last week.

Wednesday morning it was thirty-eight degrees when I woke. The high was seventy-two and the weather was amazing.

This morning about three-thirty a raccoon came crashing down from a tree with our bird feeder in hand and roused us from our peaceful slumber.

It rained last night and temperatures remained in the forties. It looks as if we will have another awesome day.

Fall Colors

Ken just sent me this photo he took on our drive a few days ago. The colors are even more vivid now. The leaves are falling fast.

The weather is amazingly warm and perfect. Temperatures are in the forties and fifties at night and the seventies and eighties in the daytime.

I am loving the sunshine and gentle breezes. The sunrise and sunset colors this time of year are vivid and spectacular.

"We arose to the majesty of another Montana sunrise…soft light filtering through the fur trees in the back yard. In quiet reverence the hollyhocks stood next to the back fence and opened widely, excited to the new day. Here in this moment they were bathed in the soft transparent caress of love."

Ken Catches His First Artctic Grayling

Ken went fishing last week in the Ruby Valley with his friend C. G. Feldman. Ken caught his first Arctic Grayling and C.G. recorded the event with these photos. The weather was spectacular that day.

Here in the Madison Valley it was cloudy and windy. Today we woke to forty degrees and late this afternoon it was seventy.

It looks as if we are in for a week of fabulous weather as we ease into fall. The leaves are turning and some are falling. Summer passed way to fast.

Harvest Time

Last Friday I had the pleasure of helping out with our new Farm to Fork program. Our forth and fifth grade students planted a garden in May and Friday morning they harvested their corn, squash and potatoes.

As you can tell it was cool after the rain the night before. In spite of the mud the kids eagerly dug up potatoes, plucked and shucked corn and picked pumpkins.

We cooked the corn so they could taste the fruits of their labor. I have never seen so many happy faces. They were talking about how it was the best corn they ever ate and how much fun they were having.

Tomorrow morning Janet and I will take their corn husks into the class room to share with them the Native American legend of why the corn husk doll has no features. Then we will teach them how to use the husks to make corn husk dolls.

Today it is a bit breezy and in the high sixties. Yesterday it was seventy-three degrees and almost no wind. I enjoyed walking and getting some sun and fresh air.

Fallen Boulder

Ken just sent me these photos from our trip last week to view the damage from the fallen boulder. You can see how much lower the lake and river levels are while they work to repair the damage.

Today the weather is awesome. It is about seventy-one degrees and the sun is shining. Earlier in the week we had rain, clouds and wind. Temperatures barely rose above sixty.

A few minutes ago I had the pleasure of watching an osprey catch a fish from the river at Lion's Park. They will soon be migrating for winter.

The moisture this past week dumped a fair amount of snow on the mountains. I heard the elk are coming down. Summer was so short this year I am not ready for winter but it is sure to arrive.

No Boats On Ennis Lake Today

Ken and I have been busy with the Fly Fishing Festival. Rainy weather moved in early last week but cleared for the two days of the event.

It was well attended and we met so many wonderful people who stopped by our booth. For the first time an Ennis resident won the boat the Madison River Foundation raffles off for the event.

Today it was sixty-five degrees when we took a drive to Ennis Lake. Last Monday a boulder fell damaging the dam below Ennis Lake. The water level was lowered by four feet making it possible to walk on foot out to Diamond Rock.

A Bear in Bear Trap Canyon

This black bear surprised us yesterday when we drove up Bear Trap Canyon to fish and hike. It was a joy watching as the little guy ambled up the side of the cliff from the banks of the river.

As soon as Ken suited up for fly fishing the rains came. The showers were relatively short lived and Ken caught more than one brown trout.

I gave up searching for choke cherries and settled in the car with a good book.

When we headed home the sky opened up and poured making it difficult to see while traversing the narrow dirt road.

We woke this morning to a thick fog.

First Snow on the Mountains

It rained during the night. We woke to a temperature of forty-five degrees. As I was about to make breakfast I looked out the patio door and discovered our first snow on the mountains.

The mountains always look so lovely when they are dusted with snow.

The leaves have been turning on the trees. Looks like we may be in for an early fall.

A Day Trip to the Park

We took time out of our busy schedule to venture into Yellowstone Park recently. It was a most spectacular day. We took our time and explored areas on foot that in the past we had driven past in a rush to see as much as possible in one day.

We walked in the forest, along the rivers and streams and peered closely at the amazing vents that emit steam from inside the earth.

As we stood in the midst of these vast miracles of nature I was reminded of just how small my part is in this incredible universe.

Fishing Early

I stopped at the Madison River this morning and found this fisherman getting his fishing in early. It is a good thing. We are expected to have some severe thunderstorms and rain later today.

Thunder storms, rain and lots of strong winds have moved through off and on this past week. The winds were so strong on Saturday night it blew a hole in the roof where friends of ours were staying.

This morning it was near fifty degrees when we woke. Right now it is about sixty. What a magnificent day.

It is so fun to watch people camping, fishing, hiking and bike riding along the Madison. Just another day in paradise.

Gravelly Range Wild Flowers

Sunday afternoon we took a drive through the Gravelly Range to view the wildflowers. What an amazing experience.

It is impossible to capture in a photo even a fraction of what we saw and experienced. The blankets of color in field after field of wild flowers is like nothing I have ever seen.

Standing still gazing out upon the vastness of God's creation makes one realize how small we are in the scheme of things.

A Walk By The River

After a hectic work day Ken and I ran out of gas and decided to take a walk by the Madison River to refuel. It was a spectacular day.

The weather has been quite warm lately. They are predicting temperatures in the 90's over the weekend. Without air conditioning it gets a bit uncomfortable but we are not complaining. It is nice to have some warmth after such a long winter.

This afternoon Ken is in the river fishing. Just another day in paradise.

Wildflowers

We took a break on Sunday and traveled south toward West Yellowstone. Ken loves to explore so we headed up into the mountains. I think we counted seven vehicles during the entire drive.

One kind gentleman stopped to suggest we go back to a bend in the road to admire three great horned owls. They were perched in two bare trees when we arrived. Sensing Ken approach they took flight one after the other to prevent having their picture taken.

The wildflowers were spectacular. I have never seen so many different colors in one place. The variety of blues, yellows, reds, pinks, oranges and white kept us searching to discover how many different types we could locate.

Thunderstorms threatened us and rain showers fell off and on. Once we reached the top the view was breathtaking and the silence welcome after such a busy week.

Nothing feeds the soul quite like a visit with mother nature.

Rainbow Clouds

Last week Ken was in Virginia City for a photography shoot on location when yet another storm with hail passed through VC. On his way home he captured this amazing rainbow.

We have been busy getting work into galleries and showing friends around our awesome back yard. It is such fun greeting visitors and sharing time with them.

I once heard someone say, "There are two seasons in Ennis...winter and company." So far this summer is turning out to resemble that description. And, of course, we are loving it.

Yesterday and today it was warm enough to wear dresses and shorts. The sun is shining and those of us who were here all winter are tempted to just stand outside in the sun.

It still gets down in the forties and fifties at night. Great sleeping weather.

Things are Changing

I just realized how long it has been since I posted. Things are changing rapidly this time of year not only in the weather but in our lives as well.

Annual fund raisers, banquets and art shows are among the events taking up any spare time we have outside of work. Everywhere you look people are rushing to prepare for the annual forth of July festivities in Ennis and Virginia City.

The moisture is feeding the plants and wild flowers are blooming everywhere. Ken stopped on our way to Belgrade last week to capture this sea of yellow.

Last night we witnessed the ending of a magnificent rainbow as we traveled home from an art show in Virginia City at Creighton Block Gallery. It rained and hailed more than once yesterday and is raining as I type this post.

We did enjoy temperatures in the eighties a couple of days this week. It felt so good to bask in some warm sunshine without sweaters and coats.

Hail

Yesterday morning we woke to the sound of cattle being driven through town. The skies were cloudy and the air filled with that moist feeling. In spite of appearances we were optimistic the weather would hold long enough for us to enjoy the Farmer's Market.

We were right. As we finished setting up the clouds gave way to sunshine and customers began to wander through in small groups.

The weather cleared so nicely Ken was able to mow the lawn. Then late in the afternoon a sudden storm passed through leaving an avalanche of hail mixed with heavy rain.

This photo was taken looking out through our patio door. This morning there were still remnants of the hail piled up next to the house and fence. It was in the thirties last night.
