Snow Heart

Snow Heart

Today I heard God's voice, it spoke to me in a dialect I could clearly understand and only I could hear. So personal and just what my Soul wanted. Today I longed for the memory of my connection with God. Must be true this “Ask And You Shall Receive”.

- Ken W. Hall

I just received this image from Ken and thought you might enjoy it.  Looks like it will be in the high forties today in Ennis with some clouds.  Tomorrow and Tuesday it is expected to reach up into the fifties with lots of sunshine.

I learned from friends in Ennis that the Sportsman's Lodge burned early this morning.  Thankfully no one was harmed.

When I talked to Ken he said he heard the fire trucks last night.  Later today he captured these images.

Temperatures remain in the twenties at night and thirties during the day.

Leaving Montana

©2015 Penny Hall
It was ten degrees and snowing when I left Montana this morning.  It was predicted to be below zero so we were pleased to wake up to a warmer temperature.

The roads were clear due to the warm in temps the past couple of days to the forties which melted the ice.

I am heading to Arkansas to spend time with family.  Ken is at home doing some fabulous work with his photography.  I marvel at his talent, passion and drive.

I will try to keep you posted of happenings in Ennis via Ken until I return.

Shelter From the Storm

It is two in the afternoon on the last Sunday in November and the thermometer is just now registering ten degrees above zero.  It was twelve below when we woke this morning to a couple of inches of snow.

Ken was checking the temperature when he noticed a deer curled up under the neighbor's trampoline.  The shed helped to block some of the strong winds that were rather brutal last evening.

Yesterday was the Woman's Club's annual Holiday Bazaar.  When we went to set up our booth it was about forty degrees and breezy.  When we left at 3:00 PM it was twelve degrees with heavy winds and blowing snow.

This is the perfect day to cuddle up inside, bake and cook soup.  I think I'l have another cop of hot tea.

A Colder Springtime in Ennis, Montana

The rain and snow yesterday did not prevent Ken from grilling our dinner outdoors.  It was twenty-nine when we woke and barely made it above forty.  The same is true today.  At least today we
experienced brief moments of sunshine.

Mystic, the cat, remained cuddled inside the blankets in an effort to keep warm.  We are hopeful that later in the week we could see a day or two reach sixty degrees.

A Little Snow

© 2014 Penny Hall
I took this photo yesterday when I went for an afternoon walk through downtown Ennis.  It was a little breezy but the sunshine was awesome.

The day began with ice covered roads.  Wednesday afternoon it snowed about an inch and left a good bit of moisture.  The ice was gone by early afternoon when temperatures rose as high as forty degrees.

More and more of the ice on the Madison River is giving way to open channels for the water to flow freely.  It is a fascinating process to watch.

With temperatures above normal it feels a lot like springtime.

2014 Greetings from Ennis, Montana

©2014 Penny Hall
Happy New year from Ennis, Montana.  2014 is here and today the wind is ushering in a new storm.  Although December brought several days of below zero temperatures our holidays were nice and travel was easy.

The Madison River gorged during the sub zero temps and is beginning to open up a few pathways.  I took this photo from Lion's Park a few days ago.  Water from the gorged river flooded the park.  I could cross both bridges but ice prevented me from walking further.

As I traveled to the office this morning just before 8:00 AM it was nice to see so many cars parked along main street.  The local cafe's were filled with customers.  That is a great start to the new year.

It was thirty degrees when I got up at 5:00 AM.  The weather man predicts rain and snow today.  Sub zero temps are expected for a couple of days at night.  Then
it should warm back up to the twenties and thirties late next week.

Watching the national news I feel blessed to be here.  Compared to other places in the United States we are experiencing a milder winter so far.

Ken enjoys watching the deer up close in our back yard.  This week he observed a mother grooming her baby.  Fortunately Ken was able to capture some of the exchange on film.

Fall is definitely here.  The mornings are in the twenties and the afternoons from fifty to sixty degrees.  This morning it is a perfect fall day.  The sun is shining.  The wind is silent and the temperature outside is warming up from an early morning read of twenty-six.

Ken just sent me these images he captured on October 1st.  I was out of town last week attending a conference on essential oils in Salt Lake City.  The weather was beautiful when I left on Tuesday and lovely on Saturday.

In between those two days temperatures dropped to the twenties and lots of snow fell.  Ken reported about three inches in town.  Friends who live outside of town at a higher elevation reported as much as four feet.

Temperatures this week have been lower than normal for this time of year.  There was frost on the card this morning and temperatures only in the low fifties.  Winter came a bit early this year.

Snow on the Mountains

© Ken W. Hall
It rained heavily for several hours the past two days.  This morning it was thirty-six degrees when we woke. Now the sun is shining.  At noon it was sixty degrees and a little breezy.

Ken just sent me this awesome image of the first snow on the mountains this season.  It arrived a little earlier than usual.  I do love seeing the snow on the mountain tops.

Bears Will Be Bears

©2013 Ken W. Hall

Monday evening I got home from picking up dinner take out. When I returned home my friend Wade Miller was in my living room talking with Penny. As I entered the house he turned his attention to me. "Do want some bear pictures?" was his greeting.

Funny he should ask I thought to myself. Earlier today, in the morning, I went to his house to retrieve some apples. While walking to some trees that have a bounty Wade spoke, "You can come out any time but if it's after dark better bring your bear spray." I replied, "I feel like I need it now, there is one in the area. I can feel it! You say there is one in Jeffers but have you seen it?"

Then came his visit at dinner time. The only way I could reply to his invite to get bear images was, "I'll meet there in twenty minutes." With that the "safari" commenced.

When I arrived in Jeffers Wade came out and we set to meet Mr. Bruin. Was it a juvenile or an adult? Subsequent steps across the road to a large stand of old cottonwoods quickly eliminated one of the choices. The bear had passed juvenile seasons in thru past seasons. The bear the bear was settled in the fork of the giant cottonwoods waiting for the cloak of the fast rising of evening. Under the shadows of darkness the bruin could satisfy the gluten of fast arriving fall and an impending hibernation thru winter. Food was calling and the bear was listening.

After surveying the situation I picked my initial camera angle, made some test exposures and took a deep breath. Show time! The curtain went up and the camera began to sing. After a dozen or so images I chose to alter the angle of view for another series of exposures. This change gave me another wonderful angle of view, a view that was acceptable only to me, not the bruin. It began to utter guttural sounds rumbling from unknown centuries of programming. A warning, one observer to the other that enough is enough. The bear unscrewed itself from the confines of the aforementioned fork where had waited for darkness. The altering of its viewpoint of me had a specific intent and the intent was to let me know, one participant to the other, things were changing and changing in quick succession. The modeling session was over and whatever i had captured was all there was going to be, at least without putting myself in the crosshairs of the the bear. The decision was simple for me since I was the one who stood the largest chance of physical change and possible rearrangement of my body.

"Adios, and thank you for allowing us to come eye to eye with each other for this time and to experience our divine creation. You enjoy you apples and a long winter's nap. Who knows, if you be a mother, I would love to meet you and your cubs next summer. You will likely remember our time together so why wouldn't you share the story with the little ones. Tell them honest and favorable tales of Uncle Ken and the whirring sounds of his camera and a sincere donation to posterity."

We fear bears because of  because of stories of bears, some horrific. Then there are the "Winnie The Poo" ones, gentle and childlike. Both transfix our senses and spawn a primal urge to tell stories. This is my story, what is your's?"

Antelope Crossing

This morning Ken was held up on his way to breakfast by this traffic jam.  Fortunately they managed to cross the road pretty quickly.

The clouds were so beautiful early this morning.  I was too late to capture them on film but Ken managed this black and white.

Yesterday we enjoyed a day of cloud cover and cooler temperatures.  It was seventy degrees in the house when we went to bed.  That is more than ten degrees cooler than it has been for a couple of weeks now.

Today the sun is shining.  There is a slight breeze and the thermometer on the deck reads eighty degrees.  It is a beautiful day in paradise.

Flowers in Bloom

The flowers are blooming and Ken is spending a lot of time with his camera admiring them.  The above are an iris and a columbine.  Both are spectacular flowers and Ken did a great job of capturing their beauty.

We have been super busy so I am late with this post.  The weather has ranged from calm hot summer like days to cold and windy days much like you would find in the fall.  This morning it was thirty-two and the roof had a white frost on it.  The clouds rolled in and the wind has been blowing so strong it is hard to stand and walk.

our summer visitors are coming back and there are lots more people to be found downtown.  I love the energy that stirs when tourists begin to drift through town.

A Sunday Drive

©2013 Ken W. Hall

Sunday morning we decided to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather.  We took a leisurely drive through Jeffers and around the lake.   Although a bit breezy it was nothing like the past couple of days.  The electric blue sky and sunshine were a welcome sight.

The birds returning for the season seemed to greet us at every turn.  Among them were osprey, pelicans, red wing black birds and a yellow headed black bird.

Lots of fishermen were out on Ennis Lake and in the Madison River.  It was a perfect day to enjoy the outdoors.

Temperatures this week were cold in the mornings.  Some days in the low teens.  There were lots of clouds this week and a small amount of rain.

The past couple of days everyone was complaining about the wind but this morning it was much quieter.  Highs this week ranged from forty to sixty degrees.

Signs of Spring

©2013 Ken W. Hall

©2013 Ken W. Hall
It was forty-six and breezy this morning when we took a walk by the Madison River.  We walked through cloud after cloud of insects.  The meadowlark and geese greeted us with grand songs of spring time.  The aspen trees are budding and the wild iris' are waking up.

We drove through the campground to see what changes the gorging made this winter.  There appeared to be less of an adverse impact than last year.  The beaver dam survived.  All the ice has melted along the river banks and the water is clear and beautiful.

The wind is picking up speed and the clouds are getting darker.  The weather man is predicting two to six inches of snow this evening.  The land will be grateful for the moisture.

It's Cold Outside

©2013 Ken W. Hall

It has been a bit colder this week...windy and fairly warm one day then cold with ice and snow the next.  This morning it was five degrees outside.  The wind was silent and the sun bright.  It looks like it will be a beautiful cold day.

Yesterday it was twelve degrees in the morning, snow during the day and temperatures did not get out of the twenties.  It is that time of year when winter and spring do this amazing dance.

Ken captured these awesome images of the sun rising over fan mountain this week.  I love the magnificence of the skies this time of year.

Lions Park Field Trip

This morning the sun is shining brightly.  At 20 degrees and a slight breeze we decided to take a short walk at Lions Park here in Ennis, Montana.

I noticed the sun and fairly warm days have melted large portions of ice from the banks of the Madison River on the park side.  The sun does not shine on the other side and temperatures are not warm enough to bring about a significant change.

A flicker greeted us as we entered the park.  Later we were joined by a couple walking their two dogs.  One of them took the time to greet us long enough to receive a tiny pet on the nose from Ken.  Then they were off enjoying the smells and freedom as only a dog can experience.

Friday we were delighted to see a group of local students at Lions Park for a science field trip.  Feeling their excitement and enthusiasm added to the pleasure of our walk in the park.

The weather this week brought us a bit more sunshine than previous weeks.  Temperatures have been in the teens at night and as high as forty in the days.  Everyone is experiencing spring fever.

Main Street in Winter

©2013 Ken W. Hall
If you have ever wondered what downtown Ennis, Montana looks like in the winter here is a Sunday morning view from Lions Park.

We took a short walk this morning just before the storm arrived bringing a mixture of rain then snow.  It was about forty degrees when we got up and now it is blowing snowing and thirty-five.

The forecast for the week is a mixture of snowy and partly sunny days.  The days are getting longer indicating we are getting closer to springtime.  Come on Spring.

Ice Fishing with Dad

©2013 Ken W. Hall
The above photo was taken by Ken a few days ago at Ennis Lake.  I marvel at those people who ice fish on our lake.

Saturday morning it began to snow just after seven and dumped about three to four inches here in town.  This morning it was fourteen degrees.

The sun came out and it has been a beautiful sunshiny day.  It looks like it is twenty-eight degrees now.  I love seeing the way the light sparkles on the snow.

A Walk at Lions Park

Yesterday the sun was shining and the temperatures were near forty.  Needing to get out and walk I asked Ken to take me to Lions Park.  I hoped enough of the walking area would be free of ice so I could walk safely.

There were a few areas free of snow and ice but a large portion of the park remained under ice from the gorging of the river.  Ken captured some lovely images during our glorious time outdoors.  The Madison River renews my energy.  No matter what happens it always manages to flow.

This morning we woke to snow falling.  I shoveled about three inches of light powder off the deck.  Now the sun is shining.  It was twenty degrees this morning and looks to be about thirty degrees now.  I love how the snow sparkles in the sun like diamond dust.
